• Dissolves cholesterol-rich gallstones in functioning gallbladder, especially when surgery is not feasible 

• Treats cholestatic liver conditions such as Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)

📋 Dosage & Administration

• Gallstone dissolution: 8–12 mg/kg/day at bedtime or divided doses; continue treatment up to 3–4 months after radiological disappearance of stones, and possibly up to 2 years if needed

• PBC: 10–15 mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses or once daily after initial period

  Acute viral hepatitis: 600 mg/day

• Alcoholic fatty liver: 300 mg/day

• PSC: 25–30 mg/kg/day

• NASH: 13–15 mg/kg/day 

⚕️ Side Effects & Precautions

• Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pruritus, gallstone opacification, mild abdominal discomfort 

• Less common: Headache, dizziness, rash, hair thinning, back pain, hyperglycemia, flatulence 

• Use caution in patients with significant liver disease; monitor liver function tests monthly during the first 3 months, then every 6 months thereafter 

🚫 Contraindications

• Not suitable for patients with calcified (radio‑opaque) or pigmented gallstones, non-functioning or poorly contractile gallbladder, or inflammatory bowel disease, where UDCA is unlikely to be effective 

• Avoid use when bile ducts are obstructed or inflamed, or during episodes of biliary colic or cholecystitis 

🤰 Pregnancy & Lactation

• Classified as pregnancy category B—studies report safe use during gestational cholestasis in the third trimester

• Little evidence of harm when used during breastfeeding; however, consult a physician before use during lactation
